Dubbed or Subbed? Empty Dubbed or Subbed?

Post by Guest Mon Jan 17, 2011 5:57 pm

To Dub, or not to Dub: That is the question. Seriously, that's my legitimate question. Some people laugh when I say I watch english dubs. I watch them when the option is open because it's easier for me, due to the fact that I don't have the split focus to read the words at the bottom of the screen and watch at the same time. But it isn't that much of an issue, since Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are the only two anime I can tolerate. Some people say that Subbed is better because it isn't Americanized- as in more swearing, blood and nudity, (considering a large number of you know that I give ANYTHING to see Winry on a Maxim before I die) it seems intriguing, but I'm not a big fan.

So, what do you guys think? Comment to let me know.

(Perhaps if you agree about the Winry thing, you know, if your a dude...)

I don't mind either way, but I perfer subb since in the dub versions everyone sounds the same to me. Also I have that double foucus thing, but it can give me a headache after a while so then I would switvh to dubb.

I try to watch subbed as much as possible because it just feels better to watch the origional, but since on the computer I often multitask (the curse of ADD) and roleplay or whatever on half of the screen while watching on the other, it is easier for me to hear what's they're saying in English so I can keep up.

I don't think I even watched a subbed anime before. Then again, I hardly ever watch anime. Blame Comcast, those F@#$ digital channel stealers... I would use YouTube, though the videos never load until hours later. Dubbed anime sucks. It sounds like they're not even trying. It also makes me downright embbarresed to watch something like that.

Dubs are fine. I don't see why some people see you as an idiot if you watch them.

Dubbed or Subbed? Empty Re: Dubbed or Subbed?

It depends on the anime, and the people dubbing.
Some dubs are actually BETTER than the original or fan subs! Yu yu Hakusho is a prime example. The american dub has way more emotion and jokes, and STILL doesn't break from the original words.
How does that work?

A good or bad dub can make or break an anime's place in a country.
Dragon Ball Z only has mild popularity in Europe due to a mediocre dub.
And One Piece has purely an online fan base due to having a terribad american dubbing.
Now keep in mind, those are the two highest selling animes and mangas of all time! I kid you not.

Another thing to keep in mind is, most animes started out as Mangas! And how well they match up determines a lot as well.
Believe it or not, but Naruto is a near perfect 1 to 1 comparison when looking at the Manga and Anime. Where as Yu-Gi-Oh has almost NO manga-anime connection! They're like two totaly different series.
Infact, a lot of fans have come to refer to shows like Yu-Gi-Oh and 2003 FMA as simply high-budget fan-fiction due to having a severe lack of Manga connection.

So for me, it's not just Sub vs Dub. But also Sub vs Dub vs Manga! (And in mangas, you have to ask whether you prefer official translations or fan translations) But in all seriousness, you have to take it on a case by case situation. Do some research, try a little of both, and see which you prefer. Not every anime/manga is the same when asking how you want to read/view it.

Thank you for the insight, 64. Although, when I was like eight, I was OBSESSED with Yu-Gi-Oh. I mean, like in an unhealthy kind of way. I still have all my old cards... and posters, and t-shirts, and my Yugi Halloween costume...
I never knew about the manga though. FMA took over the obsession vacancy in my brain, along with Narnia and This Site. xDDDDD

To me, it's a change o' the dice, I like to understand what any anime is about before I start to watch it. (Hint how I learned about the Hetalia Wiki Dubbed or Subbed? 718397 ) But I start with dubbed most of all...(Hetalia, Cowboy Be-bop, Bleach, and Afro Samurai.) If the voices start to annoy me, I'll go subbed. But it's anyone's choice, but I like both the same, because both deserve a little chance.

Subs are way better...

1. Because it's the original, and original is always better

2. Because it teaches you Japanese while entertaining you

and 3. Because who doesn't love to hear the Japanese voice actors

Dub is good but if you only watch it all your life and then go to Japan, you'll not be able to speak Japanese, something you could do if you went with Subs

Right on. I like to watch subs because you learn a lot more Japanese that way, and sometimes the original really Is the best you can get. I think it's entertaining just to hear some fluent Japanese, their whole cadence and way of speaking is pretty awesome.

But then also, I do watch my fair share of dubs. Cowboy Bebop is pretty much the definition of great dub work.

And as for the Yu-Gi-Oh! thing, as a kid, I was a raging fanatic about that show. I think I cried when Joey's sister had her eye surgery. Sad I never admitted to liking it because I was a girl, though. haha.

you take French? I'm in French II this year. Very Happy

But I can't say I ever had that problem. My mind always distinguished between the French and the Japanese, though I can say it's changed my Japanese accent... which I'm not too happy about, but then again I speak a Lot more French than I do Japanese, so. :p

I prefer subbed because a lot of the time the lines just don't translate well. Often something that sounds fine in Japanese can sound laughably stupid in English, no matter how you say it.
