Shigeru claims the series The Legend of Zelda is heavily influnced by his childhood ventures into the woods.

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could just walk into the woods, shoot laser beams out of your Magic Sword, kill unearthly beasts like Octorocks, Like-Likes, and stuff like, that and then kill a huge beast and save the princess? Not to mention hold a gold Triforce with her? And then grow up and make huge bucks out of making a series of your experiences?

Shigeru Miyamoto's life influences a lot, but not all, of his game ideas. I don't know everything about the man's inner workings, but I do know a few things.

Zelda dungeon hunting style came form Shiggy's childhood of exploring the neighborhood and a near by forest with a cave in it.

Zelda's name is based off of Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of his favorite american novelists.

Mario's name comes from the original land lord of Nintendo's American headquarters "NOA". Back when NOA was small, it had to rent the building. The ballzy land lord Mario had no problem with busting in on a meeting with the Japanese Execs when the rent wasn't paid up!

Chain Chomp originated from a childhood fear of a large black dog that his neighbor's had. One day it broke the chain and chased after him!

He has an odd hobby of being an unofficial dog breeder.... Nintendogs!

One day he decided to start a garden.... the next year? Pikmin was born!

One day he decided he wasn't happy with how his body was aging and decided to start working out.... a year and a half later, Wii fit was born!

2 years ago, he decided to fullfill a life time wish of learning an instrument, something he's always wanted to do (thus Zelda always having so many instruments). A year later, Wii Music came to be!

It's amazing how much Zelda is influnced by him though!
He likes music and always wanted to play an instrument, thus the ocarina was specifically made to be playable, and not simply "usable".

Why does Link ride a horse? Quite literally cause Shiggy likes horse back riding!

Why does Link fish? Cause Shiggy likes fishing! (It's his weekend hobby)

The funny part his, the line up of
Starting a garden 5 years ago= Pikmin
Starting a work out regiment 3 year ago= Wii fit
And starting to learn an instrument 2 years ago= Wii music
People started catching on and started paying real close attention to his day to day hobbies. It got to the point where Wii Music was assumed in the works before Nintendo even said yes to the project.

Since then, Shiggy isn't allowed to discuss his personal life as it puts Nintendo's goldmine of ideas at risk of being stolen from!
